Our Mission

The Air History Project is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich aviation history of the Pan American Airways Terminal at Dinner Key in Coconut Grove, Miami—a site that helped shape the modern world. Pan American Airways pioneered international air travel from this waterfront terminal, connecting North and South America with its iconic flying boats and laying the foundation for today’s global airline network.

We are committed to bringing this history to life through engaging exhibitions, educational programs, and partnerships with museums, historical societies, and aviation enthusiasts. Beyond preserving the terminal’s legacy, we celebrate Coconut Grove’s vital role as an early center of aviation innovation, where visionaries turned dreams of flight into reality. By sharing these stories, we inspire new generations to appreciate the pioneering spirit that transformed Miami into the Gateway to the Americas and forever changed how the world travels.

    Stephen Licata

    Co-Director

Stephen Licata has long been a passionate advocate for preserving the aviation legacy of Coconut Grove. As the founder of the Air History Project in 2020, he has worked tirelessly to ensure that the pioneering spirit of early flight—so deeply rooted in the Grove—continues to inspire future generations.

Stephen’s journey in Coconut Grove began in 1972 when he arrived as a premed student at the University of Miami. But it was the eclectic charm of the Grove’s tight-knit community that truly captivated him. While working part-time in a local clothing store, he discovered his true calling—fashion and retail. By the age of 23, Stephen had purchased the very store where he once worked, launching a successful career in apparel. Over the years, he founded multiple retail brands, including Palm Produce Resortwear and First Flight Out, the latter a nod to his deep appreciation for aviation history.

Recognizing Coconut Grove’s pivotal role in early aviation—home to historic landmarks like Pan American’s first seaplane base and Dinner Key—Stephen felt compelled to safeguard this rich heritage. Through the Air History Project, he has led initiatives to educate the public, collaborate with museums, and create engaging exhibits that celebrate the golden age of flight.

Today, alongside his thriving retail businesses, Stephen remains dedicated to preserving the Grove’s aviation legacy, ensuring that its stories of adventure and innovation continue to take flight.
